From: Nickel-induced transcriptional changes persist  post exposure through epigenetic reprogramming

Fig. 7

Post-nickel-exposure transcriptional changes in BEAS-2B cells occurred immediately after the termination of exposure. Following 6-week nickel exposure, the cells were grown in nickel-free medium (i) for 2 weeks (Ni-W-2W) and (ii) for > 6 months (Ni-W). Gene expression was examined using RNA-Seq and the results are displayed as a heatmap showing the persistently and transiently differentially expressed genes (1.5-fold up- or down-regulation, Padj < 0.05). Ni-W-2W and Ni-W cells display similar gene expression profiles suggesting that the post-nickel-exposure transcriptional changes occurred soon after the termination of exposure. TU transiently upregulated, PU-A persistently upregulated in the presence of nickel, PU-B persistently upregulated after the termination of exposure, TD transiently downregulated, PD-A persistently downregulated in the presence of nickel, PD-B persistently downregulated after the termination of exposure. Normalized log2 transformed RPKM (pseudo-count = 1) values were used to generate the heatmap
