Hypothetical model for developmental programming of DNA methylation and gene patterns by hypoxic incubation. Exposure to low oxygen during embryogenesis activates HIFs and other transcription factors (TFs), which bind to specific sites in the genome of developing cardiomyocytes. These factors recruit DNMTs and TET in a locus specific manner to methylate and demethylate adjacent CpGs, respectively. DNA methylation patterns in CpGs and CGIs are inherited mitotically and influence gene expression patterns later in life
