Adapted from Li et al. [5]

The role of Zelda during zygotic genome activation. Zelda binds to regulatory regions in pre-MZT embryos as early as mitotic cycle 2. This leads to histone acetylation and nucleosome remodeling around ZLD binding sites, which facilitates binding by other transcription factors and deposition of active histone marks. At the same time, Zelda binding prevents deposition of H3K27me3 marks and formation of repressive chromatin structure.
