Analysis of the minimally required methyltransferases for stationary methylation pattern formation with the combined mechanism. Equal parameters are used as in Figure 3Civ only the initial methyltransferase occupation is lowered from 50 to 5, 2, and 1 equidistantly positioned methyltransferases. The left panel shows 10 example simulations of which 8 end in a high methylation state and 2 in a state without methylation. The right panel shows bimodal steady-state distributions of the system with 1, 2, and 5 initial methyltransferases. The steady-state distribution of the number of methyltransferases is shown. The parameters used in these simulations are listed in Table 1, with k on = 2.4 s-1 and k recruitment = 2.4 s-1.
